Extra Activity on Thursday and Weekend

For those of you taking British Lit, I'm sorry but you can't miss class on Thursday... at least not with the professor's blessing! So, for you, the Cartoon Festival is still open. For the others, if you can go, I think it's a great opportunity to expand on this week's topic as well as a space to learn about the work being done by various organizations to help defend the Costa Rican LGBT community.

  1. Thursday night, I went to the “Centro Cultural Español”, where the “Juventud Socialista” (PST) was holding a meeting to reflect on the “Rutas del Beso Diverso”. This campaign has been of great importance for the LGBT community because they showed the rest community that people who have different sexual preferences have the SAME RIGHTS than the rest. They are human beings; they should be respected. The discrimination that homosexuals and lesbians have been victim of is INHUMAN, and it shows how intolerant we are. Not only those who offend them and call them names violated their integrity, but also those who are indifferent towards their situation. Politicians, religious groups, and narrow minded people wish they could isolate them from society. SHAME ON YOU! In most cases, they are mistreated by both family members and strangers. This society has been so hard on them, and I have been an accomplice for I haven’t done anything to chance it. Not only should the LGBT community fight against the injustice they are victims of, but also we should fight together with them. This fight is for RESPECT, for EQUALITY, and for LIBERTY.

  2. I also went to the Beso Diverso documentary and discussion. It was difficult for me to understand a lot of what was said because they spoke at juuuuust about light speed, but I understood enough to see the double standard that Costa Rican society (and much of the United States) has. Public displays of affection for all is not the first thing that comes to my mind when I'm thinking about basic human rights; I think of U.S. "Declaration of Independence" and "Bill of Rights" related issues. However, in a way, this is included in the LGBT community's pursuit of happiness. If the bars/restaurants don't want same-sex couples kissing at their establishments, that's fine. The business has the right to ask the couple to leave. However, if they do, they should have the same standard when it comes to heterosexual couples. It's an issue of double standard.

  5. Sorry about the two deletes ^. I had link issues.
I came across this cartoon today and thought of our class. It's an interesting comic because it uses the exact same story board every time and just changes the words. The cartoon that I'm referring to can be found by clicking "archive," then "May 29, 2009." I hope you like it :).
